What is SAMBa?

SAMBa is the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics based at the University of Bath in the UK.

SAMBa doctoral researchers undertake a four-year integrated programme of research in a world-class environment with opportunities to work flexibly across disciplines. They are trained to become fearless in formulating large-scale challenges in the language of statistical applied mathematics and become leading problem solvers. SAMBa graduates are able to develop and apply new ideas and methods to harness the power of data to tackle challenges effecting society, the economy and the environment.

The SAMBa Centre for Doctoral Training:

  • Provides fully-funded PhD studentships for a 4-year doctoral programme
  • Delivers excellent training and research at the interface of applied mathematics, numerical analysis, probability and statistics
  • Supports multidisciplinary mathematical PhD research, often in collaboration with external partners
  • Hosts a diverse cohort of researchers in an inclusive environment to explore mathematical modelling, inspired by real world phenomena, both in abstraction and incorporating data
  • Supports rapidly developing areas of mathematical sciences including machine learning, uncertainty quantification, optimisation, high-dimensional statistics and numerical stochastic modelling
  • Delivers a flexible PhD programme, preparing graduates for careers in industry or academia
