"SAMBa offers high level training in statistical and applied mathematical disciplines, as well as direct engagement with industrial partners"
Before joining SAMBa, I did a BSc in Mathematics at the University of Torino and then a Masters at Collegio Carlo Alberto. My research involved multilevel methods, MCMC algorithms, transport maps and Bayesian inverse problems. In particular, I worked with computationally expensive high-dimensional problems, trying to reduce the cost per iteration and performing algorithms that scale well in high dimension.
In my third year, I was selected to join the Turing Enrichment programme (https://www.turing.ac.uk/workturing/studentships/enrichment) and spent a year in London building new collaborations and broadening my research. Following that I took on an internship working for a small data science company in London. Finally I spent a year at the University of Heidelberg, working with one of my supervisors. I am now working for Amazon in Berlin as a Machine Learning Scientist.
SAMBa gave me a broad base of training, access to lots of excellent research and confidence in engaging with applications. The opportunities to spend time in London and Heidelberg broadened my perspective and personal network a lot and meant I had a really strong and varied CV which helped me stand out to employers.
SAMBa offers high level training in statistical and applied mathematical disciplines, as well as direct engagement with industrial partners. The faculty is friendly and cohesive, which makes the experience great for interdisciplinary studies. It’s a well orchestrated, fast growing reality. I could not recommend it more.
Being part of SAMBa is like being part of a little community: everyone is super supportive and there is always someone to talk to if you need it (usually with cake!).
SAMBa exposes students to a wide range of cutting edge statistical and mathematical research that will be useful to them in their PhD and later career
I joined thinking I wanted to do one type of PhD but ended up doing a completely different one due to the flexibility that was provided in finding/forming a PhD during the masters year
I had the opportunity to get involved in some international training and capacity building activities with international partners and was able to travel to Brazil and Mongolia to share my knowledge of statistical methods and applications, which was really rewarding.
I enjoyed the big portfolio of opportunities I was given, which I believe is an essential property of SAMBa and something which truly makes the programme worth it
(My supervisors) encouraged me to take my own research direction, guided by my interests, and to be involved in the wider community, presenting at and attending a wide range of national and international conferences
SAMBa provided a uniquely supportive yet challenging environment, in which one is encouraged to explore their interests and question their limits
Shortly after joining SAMBa I broke my neck in a bicycle accident. But thanks to the support from the amazing team, I was still able to make a success of my PhD. The SAMBa environment surrounds you with wonderful people and fantastic opportunities.
I found the one-on-one reading courses an incredible opportunity to both learn about a topic in detail, and to get to know a potential area and supervisor before starting my PhD
I can't imagine studying for my PhD anywhere other than SAMBa
