Welcome to Eva, Matt, Rachel and Rosa who have joined the SAMBa CDT for an 8-week summer research placement.
We are delighted to welcome four undergraduate students who have joined us for an eight week summer research placement.
SAMBa summer placements provide the opportunity for undergraduate students to work on a research project at the University of Bath for eight weeks during the summer. The placements provide a valuable experience for students who are considering a career in research to explore their potential and sample the work environment.
Each research placement student is working with a current maths PhD researcher or member of academic staff who is their project supervisor. During their placement they are given support, guidance and training in addition to the opportunity to meet PhD students and staff in the Department for Mathematical Sciences.

Project title: Game Theoretic Models
I am a second-year student at University College London. During my time at University, I have developed interests in various areas of applied mathematics, particularly the analysis of various PDEs and ODEs and their applications to real-world phenomena. I am also building my knowledge of methods in mathematical modelling and am especially interested in stochastic processes. Outside of my studies, I am passionate about art and am always looking to improve my artistic skills. I also love participating in UCL’s parkour club and am a keen runner.

Project title: Household Vaccination Strategies
I’m a final-year Mathematics and Physics MSci student graduating from the University of Bath later this year. My academic interest is in mathematical modelling, particularly looking at structural design optimisation problems to manage the spread of relevant diseases. Outside of maths, I enjoy reading, playing bass, old Nintendo games, and I’m also learning how to crochet.

Project title: Exploring hierarchical and network structure for multivariate time series
I have just completed my third year of the MMath Mathematics degree at the University of Bath. I have enjoyed studying statistics, data science, numerical methods and machine learning as part of my degree and am excited to expand my knowledge through the SAMBa summer research placement. Outside of SAMBa, I enjoy running, music and spending time with her family and friends.

Project title: Medical Statistics
I am a final year BSc Mathematics student at the University of Bristol with a particular interest in the applications of maths in studying real-world systems. During the summer I will be working on a Medical Statistics project, hoping to improve my research skills for a future PhD. Aside from my studies, I enjoy travelling, playing squash and reading.

On Thursday 11 December 2014, the University of Bath hosted the official launch of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics.
48 PhD students, academics and industrialists gathered at Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution for the first SAMBa Integrative Think Tank.
SAMBa visited Mexico as part of a University delegation from 18-26 April.
For our second Integrative Think Tank (ITT) at the beginning of June, over 60 academics, students and industrialists came together for a week of collaboration.
The National University of Mongolia in Ulan Bator hosted the two week event on stochastic processes and applications.
Dr Alexandre Stauffer has been awarded an Early Career fellowship to develop mathematical tools to analyse random interacting systems.
Following a successful trip to Mexico in April, SAMBa staff have been awarded two grants to continue to build research links.
The first event in the BUC (Bath-UNAM-CIMAT) series took place in Guanajuato, Mexico during November and was a great success.
Lizabeth Peñaloza Velasco is joining the Department as a master’s student. She is the first Mexican exchange student to join the Department.
We hosted our biggest Integrative Think Tank (ITT3) yet in January with almost 90 people taking part.
