SAMBa summer research placements provide the opportunity for undergraduate students to work on a research project at the University of Bath for 8 weeks during the summer. Students receive dedicated support from a current PhD researcher or staff member in the Department of Mathematical Sciences to conduct independent research and develop essential research skills and experience.
Research experience placements provide a valuable experience for students who are considering a career in research to explore their potential and sample the research environment. As well as working on a research project with a supervisor, research placement students undertake training, attend events such as the SAMBa conference, and have the opportunity to meet PhD students and staff and find out what doing research is like.

Each research placement student delivered a 15 minute presentation at the end of their placement to outline the project they had been working on and some of their key results. Please click on the title to see their presentations:

We anticipate that applications to undertake a summer research placement in 2027 will open in December 2026. As details of the 2027 scheme are confirmed, they will be available on the SAMBa summer placements for undergraduates webpage.
On Thursday 11 December 2014, the University of Bath hosted the official launch of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics.
48 PhD students, academics and industrialists gathered at Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution for the first SAMBa Integrative Think Tank.
SAMBa visited Mexico as part of a University delegation from 18-26 April.

Lizabeth Peñaloza Velasco is joining the Department as a master’s student. She is the first Mexican exchange student to join the Department.
