Professor Richard Butler

Richard’s research interests are focused on analysing the production and performance of composite aerospace structures. His research is on manufacturing process modelling, multi-scale modelling and damage tolerant design of laminates, with applications in civil aircraft wings. He develops novel analytical methods for predicting the strength of composite laminates with defects or following damage, and studies the optimum placement of fibres to maximise strength and improve manufacturability. He is also working with mathematicians to develop new uncertainty quantification methods for use in aerospace manufacturing.
