Ahmed graduated with a BEng in Electrical Engineering from Cardiff University in 2023. During his final year, he worked on condition monitoring systems for air-insulated electrical substations. He is interested in the application of statistical and data-driven methods to engineering problems. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and going on long walks.

Project description:
Compared to 4G LTE, 5G networks are designed to provide 100 times more data per unit area and despite an overall increase in their energy efficiency, 5G base stations can still consume more than twice as much energy as their 4G counterparts. With this in mind, network energy efficiency is becoming an important figure of merit in communication networks.

Energy optimisation problems in cellular networks often involve many coupled variables, resulting in complicated non-convex problems.  The aim of this project is to develop methods for modelling energy consumption in cellular networks. These models will then be used in conjunction with data-driven methods to solve joint optimisation problems that would otherwise be difficult to tackle with classical methods.
