ITT23 with the Macular Society and BT Group
04 March 2026

Partners the Macular Society and BT Group joined us for SAMBa's 23rd Integrative Think Tank which took place at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) from 26-30 Jan 2026.

SAMBa's 23rd Integrative Think Tank

SAMBa’s 23rd Integrative Think Tank (ITT) was delivered in partnership with the Macular Society and BT Group.

The mission of the Macular Society is to beat the fear and isolation of macular disease by funding world-class research and providing the best advice and support to people with macular conditions. We fund a range of medical, scientific and technology based research and The Virtual Eye is a key initiative for discovery and in silico experimentation.

BT Group is the UK’s leading provider of fixed and mobile telecommunications and related secure digital products, solutions and services. We also provide managed telecommunications, security, network and IT infrastructure services to customers across 180 countries. BT Group has a long and distinguished record in the research and development of future ICT technologies.

The ITT model bring participants from across SAMBa together with external partners to reformulate large challenges into mathematical questions that will lead to collaborative research projects.

Problem formulation

On Monday and Tuesday groups considered potential mathematical questions and approaches to a range of challenges presented by the partners. For the remainder of the week, the participants worked in small teams of PhD students, staff and partners, each exploring a particular mathematical approach to one of the challenges:

Macular Society:

  • Statistical models of Age-related Macular Degeneration
  • Modelling the growth of geographic atrophy
  • Metabolic vulnerability in the retina
  • Retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor mitochondria
  • Circadian rhythm and the eye / Sleep apnoea and retinal disease

BT Group:

  • Identifying good traces in very large datasets
  • Estimation of angular spread
  • Identification of the number of strong reflection clusters and their properties from noisy and partial data

The ITT was brought to a close with students presenting the work done by their team during the week and making recommendation for potential future research directions.

Future research collaborations

Following the IT, students compose technical reports which describe the potential of the research opportunities. ITT projects can lead to collaborative research for our SAMBa cohort, via PhD topics, or as smaller group projects or internships.

Through working with partners at SAMBa ITTs, we have built deep and long-term relationships.

Our next ITT

SAMBa’s 24th Integrative Think Tank will be held from 8-12 June 2026.
