ITT22 with British Geological Survey and the Department of Life Sciences
01 July 2025

Partners British Geological Survey (BGS) and the Department of Life Sciences joined us for SAMBa's 22nd ITT which took place at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution (BRLSI) from 9-13 June 2025

SAMBa's 22nd Integrative Think Tank

SAMBa’s 22nd Integrative Think Tank was delivered in partnership with British Geological Survey (BGS) and the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath.

The British Geological Survey is a world-leading geological survey and global geoscience organisation, focused on public-good science for government and research to understand earth and environmental processes. We are the UK’s premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and knowledge to help society to use its natural resources responsibly, manage environmental change and be resilient to environmental hazards.

The Department of Life Sciences delivers excellence in research and teaching across the spectrum of Life Sciences, from biology, biochemistry and biomedicine to pharmacy and pharmacology. Our research spans a diverse range of areas, from drug discovery science and healthcare, to evolutionary biology and biodiversity. We work in partnership to help create a healthier, more sustainable and connected future for us all.

The ITT model brings participants from across SAMBa together with external partners to reformulate large challenges into mathematical questions that will lead to collaborative research projects.

Partner feedback

From my side, ITT22 was a highly enjoyable experience. The engaged atmosphere and the willingness with which so many mathematicians (from PhD students to members of staff) tackled the problems I proposed really stood out. And I definitely learned too from being continually challenged to communicate across disciplines.”

Dr Charlotte Dodson, Department of Life Sciences

Problem formulation

On Monday, groups considered potential mathematical questions and approaches to a range of challenges presented by the partners. For the remainder of the week, the participants worked in small teams of PhD students, staff and partners, each exploring a particular mathematical approach to one of the challenges:

British Geological Survey:

  • Cyclostratigraphy: automatic alignment of rock growth in time
  • Quantifying and interpreting variation in groundwater temperatures beneath Cardiff
  • Using earth observation data to monitor peat health

Department of Life Sciences:

  • Evolutionary networks of DNA parasites
  • Selecting true fluorescence intensity traces from artefact: outperforming a PhD student
  • Tracking fluctuating fluorescent particles in 3D space within a cell

The ITT was brought to a close with students presenting the work done by their team during the week and making recommendations for potential future research directions.

Future research collaborations

Following the ITT, students compose technical reports which describe the potential of the research opportunities. ITT projects can lead to collaborative research for our SAMBa cohort, via PhD topics, or as smaller group projects.

Through working with partners at SAMBa ITTs, we have built deep and long-term relationships

Our next ITT

SAMBa’s 23rd Integrative Think Tank will be held from 26-30 January 2026.
