Welcome to Nancy, Yizhou, Maria and Joel who are joining the SAMBa CDT for an 8-week summer research placement.
We are delighted to welcome four undergraduate students who are joining us for an eight week summer placement.
SAMBa summer research placement provide the opportunity for undergraduate students to work on a research project at the University of Bath for 8 weeks during the summer. The placements provide a valuable experience for students who are considering a career in research to explore their potential and sample the work environment.
Each research placement student is working with a current maths PhD researcher who will be their supervisor. They will also have opportunities to meet other PhD students and staff in the Department for Mathematical Sciences.
Placement student: Nancy Mehta
PGR supervisor: Amin Sabir
Project title: Combined regularisation techniques for imaging research problems
Bio: Nancy is a second-year mathematics student at the University of Bath, particularly interested in numerical linear algebra, machine learning, and probability. She is fascinated by the intersection of different disciplines in mathematics, such as the involvement of linear algebra in almost every area of maths. Outside of maths, she can be found reading novels, watching shows, or attempting to learn a new language.
Placement student: Yizhou (Justin) Chen
PGR supervisor: Patrick Fahy
Project title: Learning to optimise for inverse problems
Bio: Yizhou completed his second year study as a mathematics undergrad student in UCL, where he developed strong interest in Computational math, programming and combinatorial optimization. During the summer of 2025, he will be working under the supervision of Patrick Fahy on learning to optimize for inverse problems. Outside of math, Yizhou loves playing football, cycling and play video games. His favourite games are Football Manager and Clash Royale.
Placement student: Maria Horner
PGR supervisor: Bill Nunn
Project title: Strategies for fast knowledge spread
Bio: Maria is a final year BSc Mathematics student at Durham University, where she developed an interest in a range of applied topics, particularly in how PDEs and SDEs can be used to model processes and how they can be solved numerically. Her other areas of interest include the applications of neural networks and dynamic programming. Outside of maths, Maria likes to knit, travel, and is currently learning how to crochet.
Placement student: Joel Bassil
PGR supervisor: Chaorui Wang
Project title: Controlled measure-valued Martingales and associated machine learning methods
Bio: Joel is studying towards a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Bath. He has just returned from a placement year in Finance to complete the Summer Research Placement with SAMBa – his project focuses on controlled measure-valued Martingales and associated machine learning methods. He has a particular interest in Probability and Stochastic Processes, and wishes to pursue this interest into a PhD. Aside from his studies, he competes in Powerlifting at the national level and also enjoys playing golf.’
