SAMBa Transfer Day 1: 1 Oct 2025

Transfer day provided a wonderful opportunity for staff and PGR students in the Department of Mathematical Sciences to hear from SAMBa students who are starting their PhD research. In a series of engaging presentations, five students presented an overview of the preparatory work they have been doing and their planned research directions.

Presenters and titles

  • Peter Crew – Stochastic Optimal Control with Singularities: Theory, Numerics, and Applications
  • Wenzhi Zhong – Scalable, efficient and compression-aware optimisation for deep learning
  • Bence Kaszas – In-context and curriculum learning of formal languages with transformers
  • Clara Hawkins – Multi-modality imaging for Diamond Light Source
  • John Carlo Dimaculangan – Theoretical and experimental applications of the multi-stage model for cell proliferation

During the break we were introduced to some of the members of cohort 12 who have joined SAMBa this academic year:  Addie Baker, Harry Semple, Amy Darroch, Jan Olucha Fuentes, Anastasia Doan, Benjamin Peter Ogwang
