Laura Sacerdote is a probabilist whose research has often been motivated by modeling problems, with a particular focus on neuroscience and biology, as well as on the study of social networks. Many of the probabilistic and statistical problems addressed in her work arise from the need to answer questions posed by the models she has developed. Her mathematical research mainly concerns diffusion processes and related first-passage problems, as well as network growth models based on random graphs.
Many of her international collaborations have been interdisciplinary in nature. She is currently Professor Emerita at the University of Turin, after holding the chair of Probability and Mathematical Statistics for more than 25 years. Previously, she was Associate Professor at the Universities of Salerno and Turin.
She founded and later coordinated the PhD program in Modeling and Data Science, as well as the Master’s degree program in Stochastics and Data Science at the University of Turin. She also developed numerous projects with companies, fostering an industrial orientation within the doctoral and programs she coordinated.
University of Oxford
Professor Colin Please works on the mathematical modelling of physical phenomena arising in practical problems and interpreting the results into the original context. His research takes place at the interface of mathematics with other disciplines primarily engineering, and bioscience.
