The core of the project was the interplay between mathematics, statistics and underwater acoustics. This led me to develop a unique set of skills as an applied mathematician who can navigate between multiple disciplines.

I joined SAMBa right before pandemic in February 2020 as an aligned student and I worked on statistical methods and techniques to answer the question: “Can we hear evidence for weather and climate change using underwater acoustics?”. After my PhD I moved to the Politecnico of Turin as a research associate working on space weather forecast using machine and deep learning models. I am now a research Fellow at the University of Southampton working on the SOUNDSCALE project where I use Statistical and Mathematical methods to help shape the cities of the future. Before joining SAMBa I did my undergraduate and masters at the university of Milano-Bicocca where I studied Mathematics and I specialised on numerical analysis methods. My bachelor thesis focused on numerical methods to solve initial value problems while in my masters I focused on machine learning from the perspective of kernel methods.

Starting the PhD right before the pandemic made the experience even more challenging but with support of my supervisors, my cohort and the SAMBa team I grew as an academic and a person. The core of the project was the interplay between mathematics, statistics and underwater acoustics. This lead me to develop a unique set of skills as an applied mathematician who can navigate between multiple disciplines.

The experience and the skill set acquired during my years in SAMBa helped me develop my academic career in a growing inter and trans disciplinary world.

I was able to use the SAMBa training in statistics, to support training workshops in Mexico and in fact took a break from my PhD to take on a statistics teaching assistant role.

I really valued the experience of being part of a cohort of students in SAMBa, which guaranteed that we were not doing our PhDs in isolation, despite working intensively on independent projects
